"SOL" by Jaurice Smiley

Vergil Millson has enough on his plate.

Between helping run his late mother’s Detroit bakery, figuring out what he wants from his future, and keeping up with the people he loves, becoming a superhero was never part of the recipe.

Then the impossible happens. After a terrifying encounter leaves Vergil with an unexplained fire burning inside him, he discovers that the heat isn’t just in his head. He can wield it. Control it. As strange abilities begin surfacing around him, Vergil is pulled into a dangerous mystery involving people he thought he could trust, powers he barely understands, and an enemy whose reach threatens far more than his neighborhood. Suddenly, protecting his family, his friends, and the life his mother built means stepping into a fight he never asked for.

Set in the expanding universe introduced in TOURIAN, SOL brings the extraordinary back to Earth through a distinctly Black, Detroit-born hero discovering that saving the world doesn’t always begin with destiny. Sometimes... it starts at home.
